Kevin Hedge

Kevin Hedge

Kevin Hedge began as BLAZE, the trio, developing demo recordings in the style of the days popular club music. With “DJ” Kevin at the controls, Josh “the piano man” on the synthesizer and the “lead vocal” styling of Chris, they turned out song after song for other artist and producers to record. Some included “This Time” by Colonel Abrams knock off Hunter Hayes, “One Man” by Chanelle and “Reachin’ ” by Phase II. The three ultimately signed their first record deal with the newly formed Quark records in ’85, producing three major club hits of the time; “Whatcha Gonna Do”, “If You Should Need A Friend” and “Can’t Win For Losing”.

The BLAZE sound caught the ear of then Motown Vice-president of A&R

Timmy Regisford, who immediately put them to work on numerous Motown projects. “These guys were making productions that was raw enough to move the club, but they always kept the integrity of the songs.” Regisford on Blaze. By now, the Blaze sound was capturing the spirit of dancers in the clubs and the hearts of radio listeners in NY.

With so many original productions receiving commercial success, the team was in high demand as remix producers and overdub musicians for other remixers. As remixers Blaze have work on Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Macy Gray, Jamiriqui, Lisa Stansfield, Babyface, Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, and countless others. As overdub musicians they have worked with DJ/producers David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, Timmy Regisford, Masters at Work and many others. It was at this point Timmy Regisford decided it was time to take it to the next level, he invited Kevin, Chris and Josh to record a full length album for the soul music icon Motown. “25 Years Later” Blazes’ first long player was critically acclaimed upon its’ initial release in ’91 and has since went on to become one of house musics’ classic albums.

“This was the first time we had the time and the budget to experiment, with sounds, equipment, and live instruments.” Kevin notes “This project allowed us to try out the song writing and production styles of our musical heroes.” When listening to “25 Years Later” you can hear all of Blazes’ influences as well as their signature soulful house sound. Josh reflects “We really didn’t know what we were doing. We just tried to emulate the productions of artist like Donnie Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and many others, who created the soul music of the seventies.” What’s most impressive about this work is, they wrote into the lyrics and the interludes a concept, an over riding theme, the story of a slain civil rights leader who was to be the reincarnate of Malcom X.After touring with bands and playing places like Wembley arena, most of the Caribbean islands and major cities in the U.S. . Blaze returned home to start businesses that included; real estate, car services, retail stores and nightlife(Kevin and Josh co-owned and promoted the Club Shelter in NYC).

During this time Chris decided to continue his career in the now popular hip hop R&B music genre, leaving Josh and Kevin to further their careers by writing and producing for other artist and vocalists. “We took this time to reflect on where we had been and what we had done, but moreover where we were going.” says Milan. “It was during this period we(now only Josh and Kevin) began to find other voices.” Kevin quips. ” We really crafted some of the production and writing tricks we are known for today, during that time.”

Hedge and Milan went on to produce three more albums under the Blaze banner : “Basic Blaze” on Slip-n-Slide/UK, “Natural Blaze : the James Toney Jr. Project” on Life Line/Japan and “Spiritually Speaking” on Slip-n-Slide/UK . Also you will find many compilation albums comprising some of Blazes’ greatest hits, a few are : “6 Hubert St.” on Avex/Japan, “Pure Blaze” on Easy Street/US, “Blaze Productions” on Playhouse/Germany and “Spiritually Speaking then and now” West End/US. In ’95 Blaze scored their biggest writing success with a song called “Hideaway” performed by De’lacy. The song went into the top ten on the UK charts and was added to a vast array compilations, racking up sales in the millions. Josh and Kevin also penned charts hits for Amira “My Desire”, “Most Precious Love” feat. Barbara Tucker, and themselves with the no# 1 dance hit “Breathe”. This helps to maintains the duo as one of the most sought after writing, production and remix teams in the business.

Blaze went on to be involved in various other productions and businesses. Kevin later partnered with the “God Father of Disco” Mel Cheren to relaunch his seminal dance imprint West End records. Blaze then released their very first mix compilation on West End entitled “Found Love” feat. the hit single title track “Found Love” by Blaze. A song dedicated to the truest kind of love, the love of self. Kevin spells out “You can only share love if you have it and it all starts with loving yourself.” “I feel Kevin and Joshs’ music is the perfect match for West Ends’ legacy. They produce danceable R&B songs. Not only are they great artist but also good businessmen.” Cheren proudly announced. “Our goal is to do what the label has always done. Release great music that will stand the test of time.” says Kevin who serves as president. Musically the group have collaborated with super DJ/Producer Louie Vega (one half of the production team Masters at Work) to assist him with the production of his own solo debut long player “Elements Of Life”. Vega quotes “Blaze are pioneers in our house music community. I’ve been lucky enough to watch them become masters as songwriters, producers and artists. I was honoured to work with them on the songs “Elements Of Life” and “Brand New Day”. In retrospect, I learned a valuable musical lesson from my experiences with Blaze. There were more emotions inside of me that needed to be expressed, but it couldn’t grow without the fostering I received from so many people, beginning with Blaze.”

After more than 20 years on the scene BLAZE is now just Kevin Hedge and he continues to produce relevant hits today as he did back in ’85. For the past 8 years Kevin has partnered with Little Louie Vega to produced the longest running weekly house party in NYC. RootsNYC located in the heart of NYC’s meatpacking district at Cielo Club takes place every Wednesday night with Kevin and Louie DJing each week. Louie & Kevin create a home for house music each and every week, spinning timeless hits that represent the very best the music they love has to offer. Playing together and with Guest Djs and artists they have made ROOTSNYC and Cielo a must attend event each week within the house community and for visitors from around the world. In 2010 Kevin and Louie took ROOTSNYC to the mainstream with America’s #1 R&B radio station WBLS 107.5 every Friday night. In three short years ROOTSNYCLIVE on WBLS has become the #1 House Music Show in the nation enjoying a prime time slot from 10pm to 12am with no signs of slowing. Currently Kevin released his first original studio production in seven years, “Follow Your Heart” which made it to #1 on Traxsource and various charts in February 2012, he then followed it up with “My Baby He Loves Me” which also made it to #1 on traxsource and all the chart and plans on releasing even more hits. “I see myself as a tool being used by the universe helping to bring lyrical messages and melodies to the world.” Kevin explains “Music is communication. Ideas come to us from the spirit of creation.”.

Blazing the past, present and future, Kevin Hedge is truly excited for all the universe has to reveal through music and the creators guidance.

Wayne Williams

Wayne Williams

From a local Deejay to an Executive at a major record label, Wayne Williams is the man behind the music. Over 35 years go, a young man started on a journey of sound. Brought to life by house and dance music, Wayne took a chance and stepped into uncharted territory. Noted for bringing disco into the Southside of Chicago, Wayne quickly became a local celebrity.

The new sound echoed through backyard summer barbecues and Wayne found himself Deejaying a different party every night. The young entrepreneur quickly built an electric empire. Wanting to capitalize on his new business, Wayne began bringing in more Deejay’s to support the craze he had created. What had started with one was now “A Chosen Few”. The group of Deejay’s lead by Wayne became the top booked company in the area. Throughout his teen years, Wayne and the rest of his company worked together to build a following. As Wayne grew with the music he decided to reach deeper into the industry and began working for Trax Records.

The Dance label gave Wayne the opportunity he needed to further develop his talents, and it was not long before he recorded his first track, “Undercover”. Using the alias Dr. Derelict, Wayne was able to gain a multitude of experience. Allowing himself to be absorbed into the European club scene, Wayne chose the hits that infiltrated through the speakers of every major club in the area. Songs like “Move Your Body” and “No Way Back” were brought mainstream due to Wayne’s natural ability to recognize hits. It did not take long before he caught the attention of a London label, Jive Records. After meeting with the label, Wayne was offered an A&R position with the company and was given the opportunity to run their Chicago studio. From day one, Wayne began selecting chart toppers. Early on he worked with Mr. Lee and also put together remixes for Samantha Foxx, but Wayne’s first major success was in his transformation of the Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Songs like “Summer Time”, “Boom! Shake The Room” and “Ring My Bell” became more than just popular radio plays.

They became songs that signified a decade. Fueled by his accomplishments, Wayne embarked on a mission to find an icon. Always keeping his ears open, Wayne was taken a back one summer afternoon when he heard an amazing male vocalist in a friend’s backyard. Enraptured by the harmonic tones, Wayne instantly became an advocate of R. Kelly. Knowing the potential of the young artist, Wayne would stop at nothing to get him signed. After a year of convincing, Jive Records agreed to give the R&B performer a chance. With Wayne’s guidance and musical know how, R. Kelly became a major player in the R&B world and it would not be long before the singer/songwriter went platinum. The Grammy award winning artist released singles such as “I Believe I Can Fly”, “Step In The Name of Love”, “Flirt” and countless other chart toppers.

Since Wayne and R. Kelly have been collaborating, R. Kelly has released 10 consecutive platinum albums. All of would not have been possible with out the influence of Wayne Williams. While working with R. Kelly, Wayne continued to search for more artists. Wayne brought Mystical, Aaliyah and Rob to Jive. In addition to selecting hits for these artists Wayne also helped further the careers of artists that were already signed to Jive. Joe’s hit single, “Stutter” which Wayne worked on went triple platinum. More recently Wayne has reached a higher level of success. His artist Raheem DeVaughn received two Grammy nominations for singles “Customer” and “Woman”. Wayne has also achieved what most would consider impossible and enabled Charlie Wilson, a man in his 50’s, to produce a gold album featuring the hit single “Charlie Last Name Wilson”. Wayne is off to a great start on Charlie Wilson’s current album with the popular single “There Goes My Baby”. The song has reached number one on the contemporary charts for 10 straight weeks, and his current single “Can’t Live Without You” is currently climbing and holds the #2 spot on the UAC charts. Wayne’s most current singles include R. Kelly featuring Keri Hilson “#1 Sex” and Raheem DeVaughn featuring Ludacris “Bullet Proof”. Wayne is very excited about R. Kelly’s new album titled “Untitled” and Raheem DeVaughn’s new album titled “Love and War,” projects that he’s currently working on.

Aside from these accomplishments, Wayne’s talents far surpass his ability to select talented artists. Due to his Deejaying experience Wayne also has the ability to create powerful remixes and he even worked on the popular Justin Timberlake remix of “Sexy Back”. Aside from this Wayne has also used his ear and background to select debut singles for popular artists. He is credited for choosing “Toxic” as the first released single off of Britney Spear’s album In The Zone. In addition to working with Jive Records, Wayne continues to inspire people through his Deejaying. Annually Wayne, along with the rest of the Deejays that make up A Chosen Few, gather together to celebrate music and all they have accomplished. The talented group of Deejays in combination with guest Deejays put on a concert for all to enjoy. The free concert started with about 150 people and has grown to over 30,000. The entire concert is put together year after year by Wayne, and is his pleasure to give back to the community that has given so much to him.

Currently Wayne deejays his “Two Nations” event once a month in New York with his partner Kenny Dope. In the future Wayne hopes to continue to grow and mature his talents. His latest music productions getting major play from underground DJs to mainstream dance floors include; “You the Feeling”, “There Was A Place”, “There Is A Place”, Acid House”, Music Saved My Life feat. Joi Cardwell”, and countless other productions and collaborations that are in the making. He desires to reach out into every facet of music and create hits in all different genres. After achieving so much success with Dance and R&B Wayne foresees his next venture to be pop. The challenge of the industry is what drives him and as long as it exists so will the excitement. His mark has already been left on the industry, but his career has barley just begun. Whether he is turning tables, selecting hits, or developing artists, Wayne Williams will always be finding his way to the top of the charts.

Davidson Ospina

Davidson Ospina. This is what you need to know about the PHILADELPHIA/NYC artist, remixer, DJ, and owner of Ospina Digital recordings, a leading label heavily influencing the current House music scene around the world.

He started out just like any other kid from Queens in the early 80’s, with an intense love of music. ‘My neighborhood exposed me to a wide variety of music. But, I was really inspired by the NYC break-dancing scene. The music at that time was so exciting and made you want to move. I felt the need to contribute to that?. He followed up on that ‘need to contribute’ and by his early teens he was not only producing his own songs, he was remixing other famous artist’s tracks.

It looked like he just might end up to be that kid who made others move.

That was just the beginning. The kid with his keyboards soon became a person sought after by those in the New York Underground scene. ‘Keyboards opened the door, to working with other producers and artists. Understanding musical changes kept my productions moving’. As his productions kept moving with the changes of music in the clubs, his sound began to push back by moving the music heard on the dance floor in new unheard of soulful directions.

His influence on the musical direction of club culture soon had established Underground superstars, like the Pet Shop Boys and Dimitri From Paris (among others), commissioning him for remixes of their own tracks in the clubs.

The momentum of his influence in the Underground did not go unnoticed. It broke through up to the Overground. Popular artists, who wanted to be heard in the clubs, began to come to him. The roster of Popular artists wanting his touch is impressive, with Ospina reworking Britney Spears (more than once), Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, Enrique Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, Mark Anthony, and, well, you get the idea.

These driving soul-soaked productions and pulsating remixes created for A-list artists paid off big in 2006. Ospina scored his first #1 hit: the chart-topping remix of Christina Aguilera’s “Ain’t No Other Man”. It became #1 on the Billboard Club and Radio Charts in September 2006 within only a week of its release. Yet, Ospina was only getting started. From there he launched his own record label and began to foster new talent by introducing new artists to the clubs. Even now, tracks from his labels can be found on all online Underground download stores (and yes, even on iTunes).

Despite his artistic success, all along Ospina never stopped short by being only an artist, he is and always will be a DJ. Artists in the dance music business are famous for creating mind-blowing tracks only to fail miserably at follow-up DJ gigs. For Ospina, that means he has to play the decks with the very same need that makes him produce the intense bridge or sweeping chord change in a song. He just has to, he could not do otherwise: ‘the DJing keeps me fresh, and helps me see what directions the crowds are moving. It’s whatever is exciting to them directly. I work at building an uplifting energy that gets more and more intense; that will keep the dance floor happy’. Ospina comes through just when the crowd needs and even demands it the most. Ospina creates deep, funky, sweaty soul House music; he creates frenzied crowds by lifting their sweaty souls up from the depths of his hard-boiled and burning funk. People are left with a lasting but infectious experience; a night they never knew could be so, so good. He knows how to drop on the crowd just what they need, the reason why they came out in the first place, a need to be soaked in joy: that feeling we all need, especially now.

It is this very ability, that Ospina has, which has made him in demand at the most underground of Underground clubs, known to only those few; along with and even up to the trendiest and hardest to get into glam venues in NYC. But more often than not, he plays out all over the world, for masses of upraised hands in the huge brand name Superclubs to bodies packed into sweaty little clubs across the U.S., Europe, and down to South America.

…So, he did end up being that kid from Queens, who, even now, makes people move. This is what you needed to know. Davidson Ospina.

His current 2011 hits include his Original Production – Davidson Ospina Ft. MJ White “Well Of Love” / Remixes for Susu Bobien “I Got My Pride” / Remixes for Dawn Tallman “U Turn”.
His latest Hit in 2012 is the Davidson Ospina Ft. David Walker “The More I Get – The More I Want”
